the Convention Center of Ceará in Fortaleza, Brazil
The Second International Conference on Climate,
Sustainability and Sustainable Development in
semiarid regions (ICID 2010) will be held 16-20
August 2010, at the Convention Center of Ceará in
Fortaleza in Brazil (www.icid18.org).
A limited number of researchers and policy makers
from Southern, Eastern and Western Africa will be
funded by the UK Department for International
Development to attend and participate in this
conference and these will be selected through a
competitive process. This funding is mainly to

4 - 7 October 2010,
De Stijl Hotel, Gariep Dam, South Africa
This year’s meeting will reflect on past learning
over the last 25 years of research within the arid
zones. The focus will be on where this research has
had an impact, how it has changed the way arid
systems are viewed, used and managed, and how arid
regions have changed over this time. The meeting
will also focus on how interdisciplinary
interactions (e.g. social and biological) are
shaping arid system management. The next 25 years
are likely to be a critical period for reducing the
stress on our arid systems whilst simultaneously
improving the livelihoods of the people of these
regions. Future research needs and directions
including those relating to human livelihoods,
combating degradation, mitigating climate change and
conserving biodiversity will also be addressed.
Who should attend?
- Scientists, students, engineers, planners, and
educators working in arid areas
- Managers, particularly those in conservation,
forestry, agriculture, and local government
- Policy makers from government
- NGOs and the private sector
- Landowners
- EIA consultants

5 -6 October 2010,
Kirstenbosch Conference Centre, Cape Town
Following
the success of the SAEON Summit held in 2006, SAEON
resolved to hold a similar forum every four years.
The aim of the up-coming Summit is to provide a
forum for sharing experiences of successful design
and implementation of environmental change
observation regimes in different bio-geographical
regions and Earth systems. It is envisaged that
through both interactive paper presentations and
workshops, the Summit will engender a better
understanding of the requirements of, and
methodologies for effective and efficient
observation of environmental change. The Summit also
intends to place human beings at the centre of
environmental change discourse by looking at the
implications of such change on human activities and
livelihoods. Furthermore, the SAEON Summit is the
only inter-disciplinary scientific event of its kind
where papers on both coastal and marine ecosystems
and terrestrial ecosystems are presented.
The format
of the Summit will be a combination of plenary
sessions (with keynote speeches followed by platform
presentations), poster sessions and workshops. The
plenary sessions will be organised around the
following subthemes of the summit:
-
Approaches and methods of long-term environmental
observation
-
Atmosphere-Biosphere-Geosphere linkages
-
Environmental change and people
-
Measuring changes in ecosystem function
- Marine
and coastal ecosystems
-
Freshwater ecosystems
-
Terrestrial ecosystems
The
following workshops will take place as part of the
Summit:
-
Approaches and methods of long-term environmental
observation
- Data
and information management
- The
Summit Dinner on the 6th October 2010 will also
double as an occasion for the formal launch of the
SAEON Fynbos Node.
Interested
individuals may register to attend the Summit by
completing the registration form which is available
at
www.saeon.ac.za/summit. The fees are set as
follows: R500 full registration for both days or
R250 for registration to attend for one day.
Institutions and organisations will have an
opportunity to display banners, exhibition stands,
and literature for promotional purposes at the
Summit. They may also show videos or DVDs. Those
interested to exhibit at the Summit should contact
Monako Dibetle on telephone number 012 349 5140, or
by e-mail to
monako@saeon.ac.za.
Full-time
students are invited to participate in the SAEON
Graduate Student Network Poster Competition to be
held on 7 October 2010 by submitting a poster paper
for consideration by the organisers by 13 August
2010. The selected posters will be on display
throughout the Summit, and there will be specific
opportunities for discussion and engagement with
delegates. Poster abstracts will also be published
in the refereed summit proceedings.
Deadline for abstracts for platform and
poster presentations: 30 July 2010
