The NFEPA project is a multi-partner project between CSIR, South African National
Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Water Research Commission (WRC), Department of Water
Affairs (DWA), Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), Worldwide Fund for Nature
(WWF), South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) and South African National
Parks (SANParks). The NFEPA project aims to:
- Identify Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas (hereafter referred to as ‘FEPAs’) to meet
national biodiversity goals for freshwater ecosystems; and
- Develop a basis for enabling effective implementation of measures to protect FEPAs,
including free-flowing rivers.

that will operate between the years 2010 and 2014.

Kamfers Dam, located just north of Kimberley, South
Africa, is under threat from deteriorating water
quality due to a badly managed sewerage works. This
wetland is home to: the largest permanent population
of Lesser Flamingos in southern Africa; the only
Lesser Flamingo breeding site in South Africa; one
of only four Lesser Flamingo breeding sites in
Africa, and six in the world and a host of other
endemic and threatened waterbirds. Kamfers Dam is
also a South African Natural Heritage Site and an
Important Bird Area.

South Africa is
committed to submitting its Second National
Communication (SNC) to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in
partial fulfilment of its obligations under this
Convention, by early 2011. A call for expressions of
interest is hereby issued to interested and
appropriately qualified individuals and research
groups to participate in this project.
