New: Field assistant required in Kalahari

I am currently based in Tswalu Kalahari Reserve and need assistance in the field for a minimum of two weeks during March, starting as soon as possible. The field work will involve trapping birds (setting up mistnets and springtraps) and obtaining blood samples from birds. If you have any experience in the above and you are willing to spend the entire day (temperatures can exceed 35°C), and potentially, late nights in the field, please contact me as soon as possible (see
contact details below). Food, accommodation and travel costs (bus or airfare to Tswalu) will be covered.

Working on Fire is a vibrant partnership programme involving the private and public sectors, aiming to reduce the occurrence of damaging wildfires by facilitating, co-ordinating and implementing integrated fire management across the fire-prone regions of South and southern Africa. Funded primarily by the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs as an Expanded Public Works Programme initiative, there is a strong developmental focus in the way it does business.

We are seeking four enthusiastic, self –starting individuals to join the WoF Advocacy team, who have a qualification in Social Work, enjoy teamwork and appreciate the diversity of cultures in the rainbow nation. They should be able to create and maintain professional helping relationships and be qualified to provide crisis intervention and counselling if required. Developmental work includes building problem solving, life and coping skills with firefighting staff and community groups, using workshops and other proven capacity building techniques.

New: Project Coordinator: Pollination and other ecosystem Services Projects

Kirstenbosch Research Centre, Cape Town (2 year Contract, Salary level 10)

The Applied Biodiversity Research Division of SANBI undertakes projects on biodiversity and ecosystem services. One of the main projects that will soon be implemented is the Global Pollination Project, funded by the GEF and co-ordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This project will assess the sustainable use of pollination services in seven countries using the ecosystem approach.

SANBI is looking for a highly motivated individual to co-ordinate and manage the pollination project and contribute to the development and management of related projects on ecosystem services. The incumbent will be expected to co-ordinate the inputs from different partners, manage the staff, budgets, and contracts relating to the projects, and liaise with the donors and other country co-ordinators to ensure effective implementation. The post requires a well organized individual with good interpersonal skills, proven ability in the key performance areas relating to people and financial management, and knowledge of the biodiversity network in South Africa. Experience in implementing large biodiversity projects and an understanding of ecosystem services would be an added advantage.

new: Grasslands Programme: Call for proposals - Funding available for MSc, PhD or Post-doctorate projects in 2010

The Postgraduate Bursaries are available to students who are registered or intending to register full-time for MSc, PhD or Post-Doctorate degrees in 2010 at any university which has the resources to support the intended field of research. The bursaries are funded by the Grasslands Programme and funding requests of up to R100 000 will be approved if they have sufficient merit.

Field of Study: The Postgraduate Bursaries will support priority research areas identified from the grasslands research strategy (copy of the research strategy available from www.grasslands.org.za). Research projects must demonstrate linkages with topics identified in the research strategy under these themes:

  • Research on pressures, threats and adaptation of the grasslands
  • Quantifying and monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem services
  • Predictive understanding of ecosystem response to change
  • Supporting conservation actions and plans by Conservation authorities

Preference will be given to research projects that support the implementation of the UNDP-GEF-funded programme of mainstreaming biodiversity objectives into major production sectors operating on the grasslands biome, namely, agriculture, urban, forestry and coal mining.
