Throughout the forum series
of paper and poster sessions
were also held. Paper session
themes included ecosystem
services, soils and nutrients,
fire ecology, urban ecology,
conservation planning and
partnerships, as well as
partnerships and civil society.
The prize for the best paper
presentation was awarded to
Pippin Anderson (UCT) for her
talk on The impact of
grazing along an environmental
gradient in the Kamiesberg.
The best student presentation
prize was awarded to Diane
Southey (UCT) for her talk on
Exploring weather as a
driver of large fires.
Elvis Mubamu Makady (Stellenbosch
University) was awarded the
prize for the best poster

Forage preference and plant
palatability across a grazing
gradient in an alluvium
fynbos-renosterveld mosaic.
The Theo Manuel Award was
presented to Wilma Strydom (Stellenbosch
University and CSIR) for her
presentation on Evidence of
people's awareness of and
attitude towards river
conservation in the Buffalo and
Hartenbos & Klein Brak
catchments.
On the second day of the
forum a series of field visits
were conducted. One interesting
visit titled
Trapping carbon with spekboom
focused on the usage of
spekboom for subtropical
thicket restoration. The
significance of spekboom in
terms of carbon sequestration
was also highlighted.
Participants were taken to
various sites to assess the
success of spekboom propagation
over time in different areas
and thus under different
conditions. They rounded off
the day by planting their own
spekboom cuttings.
For more details see the
Interfaces 2008 website
Interfaces will be selling CD's
containing the presentations of
this year's Conference.
Presentations will be FLASH-encoded
to copy-protect images and other
content. The product will include a
search function, enabling the CD to
become an easy-to-use reference and
resource. If presenters include
notes about the presentations or
additional data, this can also be
included at the presenter's
discretion (if you rely primarily
on graphics, additional notes would
obviously make the presentation
more readable).
The CDs will be posted in order to
simplify the collection and
distribution process. If you are
interested, we advise that you
coordinate with your co-workers and
limit your order to a few "office
copies" which you are free to
replicate for the rest of your
office.
Orders
and payment can be made each
morning at the Conference
registration table. Early orders or
enquiries can be emailed to Jay Reeler at
2365862@uwc.ac.za (please put
"FF CD order" as the subject line).
Cost R20 per CD. Please note that
we have to thank BIOTA for
subsidizing the CDS, hence the very
good price this year!
