Project description

This project is studying the adaptations of giraffe. It is building on previous work on the evolutionary biology of giraffe (Trans. Roy. Soc. S.A. 48: 207 - 218 and 58: 51-73), thermoregulation (Trans. Roy. Soc. S.A. 59: 49-57), the structure of their skeletons (Journal of Zoology (London) 264: 317-326 and 267:55-61 and Onderstepoort J. Vet. Res. 75:1-9), and the functioning of their cardiovascular system (Journal of Experimental Biology. 209:2515-2524). Current work is aimed at developing allometric analyses of their patterns of growth, the respiratory system, and the cardiovascular system and at describing the structure and functions of the neck.
